Cornelius and Rita Martor were both born and raised in Liberia, West Africa. They have five children, two of which they gave up for adoption while still living in Liberia in order that they may have a better life because of the Civil War there. They fled into neighboring Guinea where they lived as refugees for a few years before returning to Liberia in 2005 after the war. In 2009, they came to the USA as immigrants and became US citizens in January 2019. With the passion for their home country as it relates to providing opportunities for underprivileged children and single mothers, they established the Magkie Foundation International in honor of Magdalene and Melchizedek, their two children that were adopted out.
Since 2015, they have established two schools in Liberia- the Rowena Arnold School in Ganta Liberia, and Life Chapel International School System in Chicken Soup Factory Garnesville. They also partner with Diecke United Methodist School in Guinea providing scholarship to orphans and Ebola victims. Every year funds are being raised through their foundation for students’ scholarship, church development, agriculture and teachers’ salaries in Liberia.
In continuation of their pastoral call to ministry, Cornelius and Rita founded the Life Chapel International Ministries on January 16, 2011. They have begun two churches in the United States and 10 churches in West Africa – seven in Liberia and three in Guinea. Due to the very poor healthcare delivery system and growing concerns about high infant mortality rate in Liberia, the Martors remodeled their old home into a community clinic to help save lives and restore hope to people in their home town.
According to USA TODAY 2019 report on global poverty, Liberia is presently one of the world’s poorest countries. With support from individual donors, churches and organizations in the United States, they are encouraging members of their congregations in Guinea and Liberia to engage into short- and long-term food production and commercial farming. Currently, there are two commercial farms in Guinea – 10 acres which grows rubber and five acres growing palm. Additionally, in Liberia, a 10-acre farm grows cassava.
Cornelius continues to travel back to Africa at least once a year to continue the work that he has started there, assisting in what needs to be done and to begin new projects. He is a man of vision and has deep passion for his native country and the people living there. Meet their kids below:
